When Nils G. Ringstrand, the newly employed forestry manager for Mo och Domsjö (MoDo) in Umeå, needed a distinguished residence in his new home town, he turned in 1897 to Stockholm architect Kasper Salin. Salin had designed the forestry company’s worker housing at Norrbyskär (see: Norrbyskär!) in American shingle style, which appealed to Ringstrand.
The villa – which was based on designs by Gustaf Lindgren, a colleague of Salin – has a National Romantic idiom with Old Norse elements. The open floor plan finds expression in an asymmetric facade treatment with dormers, frontispieces and bays. Decorative linings and bargeboards, varied window types, turned posts and ornaments adorn the facades.
