Project Description

Väven – Umeå’s new cultural centre with a library, cinema, hotels, conference facilities, museum, exhibitions, a café and more – is a controversial creation in many ways. Some think that Väven is an abomination that most closely resembles a modern Finnish ferry that somehow made its way under the bridges. Others can sense the tension between old and new, with the customs house to the left and the old shipping hotel (now Stora Hotellet) to the right.
If you ask the architects, you will be told that the building’s appearance is associated with the fact that Umeå is popularly known as “the city of birches”.

The many activities conducted within its walls defy description. With all the changes going on here, the best advice is to visit and see for yourself.
